How to Quote from Quran and Hadith?

1) Al-Quran

  • Before the quotation, "according to the Quran...", "Allah says in the Quran..." or "when it is said to them,..."
  • A saying / speech should start and ended with "....".
  • After the quotation, the translation will end with the name or the number of chapter (surah) and verse (ayat). Example:  "...blessings and mercy from Allah" [2:157] or  [Al-Imran:157]
Example:
- According to the Quran: "They are those on whom (descend) blessings and mercy from Allah" [2:157]

- Allah says in the Quran: "When you remember Me, I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and reject not Faith." [2:152]

Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error. Whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah hears and knows all things. [2:256]

When it is said to them, "Believe in what Allah has sent down," they (the People of the Book) say, "We believe in what was sent down to us:" yet they reject all besides, even if it be Truth confirming what is with them.
[Quran 2:91]

2) Hadith

  • Before the quotation, "As reported by ...", "Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) or (peace be upon him) / (p.h.b).
  • A saying / speech should start and ended with "....".
  • After the quotation, the translation will end with "narrated by..." or "Prophet Muhammad (s) said as reported by Abu Said Al Khudri in Sahih Bukhari"
Example:
- As reported by Ibn Masud,  Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "They are the losers, those who make the religion hard and tough. They imperil themselves who enforce tough practices of Islam. They destroy themselves, those who are extremes."

[W]hoever abstains from asking others, Allah will make him contented, and whoever tries to make himself self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than patience." Prophet Muhammad (s) said as reported by Abu Said Al Khudri in Sahih Bukhari, vol 2 hadith 548.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said “That which is lawful is clear, and that which is unlawful is also quite clear. Between these two is that which is ambiguous, which most people do not know. One who avoids the doubtful safeguards his faith and his honor.” Riyadh-us-Salaheen, Hadith 588

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was asked what type of earning was best, and he replied: ” A man’s work with his hands and every (lawful) business transaction.” Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 846.

The Prophet also said: “A truthful and trustworthy merchant is associated with the prophets. Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 50.

3) Fact (APA style)

Example:
1) Books
According to Jones (1998), "Students often had difficulty using APA style, especially when it was their first time" (p. 199).
-She stated, "Students often had difficulty using APA style" (Jones, 1998, p. 199), but she did not offer an explanation as to why.
